What is a Semi-welded Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger?

The semi-welded plate heat exchanger is a heat exchange device that combines the advantages of a detachable plate heat exchanger and a fully welded plate heat exchanger. It is designed to handle corrosive, toxic or high-pressure fluids while maintaining the advantages of efficient heat transfer and easy maintenance of the GPHE.

The semi welded gasketed plate heat exchanger is composed of welded flow channels and conventional flow channels alternately. The welding flow channel is a plate group formed by welding two plates at a 180-degree angle to each other. Each plate group is sealed with a sealing gasket to form a detachable conventional flow channel. The plate group is assembled between the fixed frame and the movable plate and tightened by tightening the bolts. The corrosive medium flows through the welding flow channel, and the conventional medium flows through the conventional flow channel and complete counter-current flow is created for the highest possible efficiency. The corrugation of the plates provides the passage between the plates, supports each plate against the adjacent one and enhances the turbulence, resulting in efficient heat transfer. This design can increase the turbulence intensity of the medium when it flows through the heat exchanger, improve the heat exchange efficiency and reduce the pressure loss. Even if the medium flow rate in the heat exchanger is very low, a high heat exchange efficiency can be achieved.

The semi welded gasketed plate heat exchanger is an ideal heat exchange equipment for corrosive media, especially for the evaporation and condensation of refrigerants such as ammonia and Freon. The semi-welded plate heat exchanger maintains the flexibility of the GPHE type, which is convenient for maintenance and replacement, and plates can be added later according to need.

Semi-Welded type vs Gasketed type vs Fully-welded type

Feature Semi-Welded Type Gasketed Type Fully Welded Type
Seal Type The sealing between the plates alternates between welds and gaskets The plates are sealed with gaskets and clamped by frames and bolts All plates are fully welded together
Maintenance Moderate (gaskets can be replaced) Easy (plates can be disassembled) Difficult (cannot be disassembled)
Leakage Risk Low (welded sections) Moderate (gaskets degrade over time) Very low (fully welded)
Cost Higher than gasketed units Lower cost Highest due to complexity
Pressure & Temperature  Moderate Moderate High
Applications Industrial refrigeration (especially ammonia, CO2 systems), Chemical industry, Petrochemical Industry, Oil refining, etc. HVAC, district heating/cooling, General industrial cooling/heating, Food and beverage, Marine, Light chemicals, etc. High temperature and pressure, Highly corrosive Media, Hazardous chemicals, Oil refining, Petrochemical, Gas processing, etc.

Advantages

Due to the counterflow or crossflow design of the plate heat exchanger, its heat transfer coefficient is 3-5 times higher than that of the traditional tube heat exchanger. Compared with the fully welded PHE type, it can be more flexibly adjusted according to the working conditions, and the detachable design is easy to clean and maintain. Because one channel is welded and sealed, it can withstand higher pressure than the gasket type.

To meet the requirements of different working conditions, JINFAN provides a variety of specifications of high-temperature resistant plates and gaskets. The heat exchanger that meets specific working conditions can also be customized according to your needs. Our professionals are committed to providing customers with efficient and reliable heat transfer solutions.

Customer Feedback

**** General Manager of Thermal Power Plant

"After replacing the semi-welded heat exchanger, we placed the high-pressure side and the corrosion-prone river water side in the welded channel. This effectively resists high-pressure shock and corrosive media erosion of the seals, ensuring long-term stable operation of the system."

**** Equipment Manager of Large Cold Chain Logistics Center

"The welded seals on the ammonia liquid channel completely eliminate the risk of ammonia leakage. Its heat exchange efficiency is nearly three times higher than that of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, reducing our main engine operating load and significantly reducing electricity consumption."

Frequently Asked Questions

Fully welded heat exchangers are indeed more resistant to high pressure and high temperature, but they cannot be disassembled for internal inspection and cleaning. Once scale or blockage occurs, cleaning becomes extremely difficult. Semi-welded heat exchangers place hazardous fluids on the welded side, ensuring safety. Relatively clean fluids are placed on the gasketed side, allowing the unit to be disassembled for physical cleaning, just like a conventional plate heat exchanger, resulting in lower maintenance costs and downtime./div>
Typically, the initial purchase cost of a semi-welded plate heat exchanger is higher than that of a conventional removable plate heat exchanger of the same heat transfer area. This is because semi-welded plates require a more precise laser welding process, and the plate materials and design often must meet higher safety standards.
The gasket replacement process on the gasket side is similar to that of a removable heat exchanger, requiring the plates to be compressed and then loosened. Damage to the plate pair on the welded side usually requires return to the factory for repair.
Media Properties: Which side carries high-pressure, hazardous, toxic, or expensive media? This side should be designed as the welded side. Which side carries media that is prone to scaling and requires regular inspection or cleaning? This side should be designed with a removable gasket. Pressure and Temperature: Do the operating conditions exceed the tolerances of standard gaskets? If one side experiences high pressure or temperature, consider welding that side.
The core advantages lie in safety and pressure tolerance. The welded side of a semi-welded plate heat exchanger is designed for high-pressure/corrosive media, virtually eliminating the risk of leakage.
