Plate heat exchangers in commercial refrigeration: cold storage, supermarket central racks with secondary refrigerant loops, and building chillers.

Plate Heat Exchangers in Commercial Refrigeration

- Cold Storage, Supermarkets and Chillers -

Condencer Heat Recovery

Three very different buildings share one problem. A distribution centre running cold rooms at −25 °C, a supermarket with forty display cases spread across two floors, and an office tower whose chiller plant sits in the basement all have to move heat out of a space and reject it reliably, year after year, while someone else's business runs on top of them. What each of them does with its heat exchangers is different — different refrigerants, different circuits, different failure modes — and the plate heat exchanger has become the default answer in most of those positions, because a plate pack reaches a small temperature approach, holds a small refrigerant charge, and fits into rooms that were never designed to have spare space.

Commercial refrigeration shares its physics with every other refrigeration application and almost none of its practical constraints.

The Load Is Small but the Hours Are Long

A supermarket rack runs most of the year at part load, with short peaks during restocking and summer. This makes a plate pack's tolerance of low flow velocity almost as important as its peak performance.

A Leak Is a Business Event

Refrigerant distribution creates potential leak points along pipework, adding maintenance, compliance and environmental costs. Moving distribution to a secondary fluid reduces the refrigerant circuit and puts the plate heat exchanger at the centre of the system.

The Plant Is Usually a Retrofit

Chillers are often replaced within existing pipework, while cold rooms are extended and refrigeration racks are added. A gasketed plate heat exchanger can be opened, re-plated and re-rated on site when capacity requirements change.

Specific Application of Plate Exchangers in the Food Industry

Cold Storage

Commercial Cold Storage and Distribution Centres

A cold store is a refrigeration plant with a large, steady, low-temperature load: chilled rooms near 0 °C, frozen rooms at −18 °C, blast freezers pulling product down in a few hours, and a dock that adds and sheds load as trucks arrive. The exchangers here are larger than in an air-conditioning plant, and the plant follows industrial refrigeration practice rather than packaged commercial equipment. The selection pressure in a distribution centre is rarely efficiency — it is water quality and defrost. Cooling tower water on a cold store site is often the dirtiest stream in the plant, and a standard-channel plate pack on that duty will foul faster than a shell-and-tube. The honest answer on such a site is either filtration and water treatment as a specification item, or a wide-gap plate pack on the water side; for plant-wide cooling and lubricant duties, JINFAN Wide-gap Plate Heat Exchanger cover the same principle across a wider duty range.

Large Supermarkets

A supermarket is the hardest commercial refrigeration application there is, for a structural reason: the refrigerant has to travel from a machine room to display cases spread over thousands of square metres. The industry's answer has been to shrink the refrigerant circuit and hand distribution to a secondary fluid. Two architectures dominate.

Water Chillers in Commercial Buildings

An office tower, hospital, hotel or shopping centre runs on chilled water, and the chilled water is made by a chiller whose evaporator and condenser are heat exchangers. Plate exchangers appear in three positions, each with different constraints. For the building-side picture — chilled and heating water distribution, district cooling substations and the isolation logic — see our notes on Plate Heat Exchangers in HVAC and District Cooling .

Why Choose JINFAN

plate heat exchanger products

Plates and gaskets for the installed base you already have. Supermarket chains and facility operators carry a mixed population of exchangers from AL, APV, GEA, Tranter, Schmidt, Sondex, Vicarb, Thermowave, Hisaka, Botal and Funke. We supply compatible PHE Plates and gaskets for those units, so a leaking pack or a fouled cassette is a parts order rather than a plant modification.

A construction for every refrigerant and every site. Gasketed, semi-welded and fully welded bLoc packs, plus wide-gap plates for dirty cooling water — so a specification that starts on a clean glycol duty and later moves to ammonia or CO₂ stays inside one supplier.
